German Sausage with Potatoes and Onions

This is a fairly simple recipe, but one that I'm determined to master.  You see, my boyfriend is mostly German and this is a big family recipe.  If I want in, I've got to get it right.  This is my first try doing it on my own, and I'm blogging as James is upstairs fixing his neighbor's computer.  I'll let you know his verdict when he comes back down to eat.  Anywhoo....

Like I said, it's a pretty simple recipe.  You will need:

2 Tablespoons Butter
1 Medium Sweet Yellow Onion, thinly sliced
German Sausage, cut into inch-long pieces
2 Large Red Potatoes, sliced
Salt and Pepper to taste
Beer (or in our case, Near-Beer)

Melt the butter over medium heat in a large skillet (not non-stick) and add the onion.  Let the onion sauté for a while and add salt and pepper to taste.  Add the german sausage pieces and cook until they are a light grey color.  Add the potatoes and turn the heat up to medium-high.  Continue cooking the mixture until everything is carmelized.  Add a splash of beer to deglaze the pan.  (I did this on a whim and it ended up making a really nice gravy.)

Serve in bowls, and try not to cringe when your boyfriend adds cheese to his serving.

P.S.  He smelled it from upstairs, came downstairs and gobbled it up.  Success!
